Protecting Large Carnovires, Carpathian Mountains, Slovakia

Biosphere Expeditions promotes sustainable conservation and preservation of the planets wildlife by forging alliances between scientist and the public. Ordinary people are invited to be actively engaged in the conservation project work they carry out together with scientists. The projects benefit not only the ecosystem or species they are designed to conserve, but also the local helpers and their communities.

The Project

With higher numbers of wolves, lynx and bears in Slovakia since the second half of the 20th Century, conflicts with local people have become more common. They are accused of causing losses to livestock, game stocks and also other threatened species. Very little research has been carried out on the place of carnivores in ecosystems to inform conservation. This project would carry out this research by
-producing educational material about the carnivores for locals and visitors, to ensure that people have a better understanding of the carnivores and the actual threat that they pose
-3 local people will take part in the Biosphere Expeditions scholarship programme, carrying out research in the Veika Fatra National Park, and communicating their findings.
-purchase 20 cameras to study the carnivores in their habitat.

We are hugely grateful for the support of the European Outdoor Conservation Association, without whose support we could never have realised such an ambitious project.
