Professor Martin Price, Director of the Centre for Mountain Studies at Perth College, University of the Highlands and Islands, has become the Scientific Advisor to EOCA on mountain projects and issues. Jonny Hughes, Director of Conservation for the Scottish Wildlife Trust will advise on projects with a wetland theme and species specific projects. Professor Charles Sheppard, Professor at the School of Life Sciences, Warwick University will advise on marine projects and issues. Dr Nick Brown, Forestry Lecturer at Oxford University will provide support on forestry projects and issues.

Although the final decision on which project applications make it onto the EOCA shortlist each year will remain with EOCA Managers, the scientific advisors will be available to comment on specific projects, and advise on their suitability for funding. In addition, the scientific advisors will give guidance on how the public can minimise their impact on the specific habitats for which they are experts when out in the great outdoors, and provide features for the EOCA website on specific conservation issues.

John Jansen, acting President of EOCA said, “as EOCA becomes more and more well known, we are receiving an increasing number of project funding applications, with 74 applying this year alone. The standard of the projects is very high indeed which makes the process of shortlisting the projects a rewarding but difficult one. We are delighted to welcome our Scientific Panel of experts and we very much look forward to being able to draw on their expertise.”
