Following an exciting OutDoor in Friedrichshafen last week, the stakes were raised as Patagonia Europe was made the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA)’s second Conservation Champion.

Patagonia’s extraordinary support of EOCA was recognised for three reasons. Firstly, for the hours of work and support put in by EOCA president and General Manager of Patagonia Europe, Holger Bismann. Secondly, for the enormous amount of product donated by the company towards EOCA’s conservation fundraiser at OutDoor this summer – amounting to over 25% of the total donations. And thirdly, just before the show itself, Patagonia Europe nominated EOCA as a 1% for the Planet recipient – which has subsequently been approved. This means that 1% for the Planet member companies, who have all committed to give 1% of their sales annually to approved environmental groups, as Patagonia has been doing since 1985, can now name EOCA as one of their recipients. EOCA is very hopeful that this approval will boost its ability to fund further conservation projects each year.

Holger Bismann, who was surprised with the presentation of the award on stage at the OutDoor Party last week, was delighted. “This is a very special award for Patagonia Europe, because we support 100% what EOCA is doing – bringing the European outdoor industry together to support conservation. Being recognised in this way is really the icing on the cake and we are all so proud to be supporting conservation through the Association”.

Commenting on behalf of the Association, Catherine Savidge, General Manager, said, “We are delighted to name Patagonia Europe as one of our first Conservation Champions. They have been solid partners and commited supporters of EOCA from the beginning, and the faith they have shown in the organisation as is has grown has really spurred us on to keep aiming higher. We hope that their lateral thinking, of linking us with 1% for the Planet will lead to a productive new funding stream in the future.”

The award, introduced after Original Buff, S.A. put 1% of the proceeds from their Merino Wool Buff® forward to fund three conservation projects, recognises EOCA members that go ‘one step further’ to support conservation through the Association. The award will be made dependent on the size of the member company and the effort made towards conservation, rather than the size of the contribution itself.

Both the Breathe Foundation and the Atlantic Rainforest Institute would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank EOCA for its support of this project, and its ongoing support of projects like ours across the wide spectrum that it engages in.  Without the commitment and funding from the European outdoor industry assist established or start-up initiatives, many would never make it off the ground... and this [particular]  project and its roll out may never have been possible.
