Camping is a fantastic outdoor activity that has tremendous health, mental, physical and social benefits. It allows us to connect with nature, bond with others, keeps us fit through exercise and improves our mood. Recent trends show people in Europe are increasingly embracing the great outdoors. Whether you are an avid camper or new to the activity, staying safe during your trip should be your top priority. One of the primary dangers of camping is body heat loss. Regardless of the season, unexpected weather change is common in the wild and can overwhelm your body leading to life-threatening emergencies such as hypothermia. An outdoor expert notes that equipping yourself with the appropriate kit can save your life. Below is a guide to staying warm when camping in Europe.

Heat loss is a natural process that helps the body to maintain its normal temperature. The body generates heat from food metabolism, and energy stored in various organs. According to an outdoor specialist’s article on how the human body loses heat during camping, it is lost to the environment in five ways. Radiation where heat is lost from exposed skin and body parts, conduction through contact with a cooler object, respiration through inhaling and exhaling colder air, evaporation where water loss draws heat away from your body, and convection where cold air displaces the layer of warm air near the skin. When heat loss to the environment happens continuously and no measure to regain it is taken, your energy levels become low. The risk of hypothermia becomes real when your body loses more heat than it can generate. An article in The Guardian notes that fatalities due to hypothermia can happen even at moderate temperatures.
How To Stay Safe
To guarantee your safety, you need to have the right gear. Before going outdoors, ensure you assemble and checklist all equipment. According to an official camping guide, you should bring adequate bedding and clothing to stay warm. First, the quality of the sleeping bag is a significant factor when it comes to fighting heat loss when camping. A good bag should manage to keep warm air around your body and be comfortable throughout the night. For the best results, choose a bag that is insulated, water repellent, has a 20 degree + temperature rating and is correct for your size. Second, you will need a good sleeping pad. A pad not only functions as a buffer from the uneven surface but it is also an essential barrier between you and the cold ground. Foam sleeping pads are recommended as they provide you with the much-needed insulation to keep you warm all night long.


Since it’s impossible to control temperatures in the outdoors, you need a tent to stay safe from the harsh outdoor elements. According to an article on The Great Outdoors Magazine, a good tent should protect you from the chilling winds and precipitation, and still provide proper and adjustable ventilation. This ensures it doesn’t overheat making you sweaty and wet. Heat loss can also be controlled by wearing the right clothes. There is no worse camping experience than shivering all night and wishing you were in the warmth of your bed back at home. An article in the Oxford Royale Academy site notes that dressing in layers is the key to beating the biting cold. Layers are ideal for changing conditions as you can add or remove depending on the temperatures. Compared to heavy clothing, layers are easier to dry when you come into contact with water.
When camping, always ensure your sleeping gear and clothing is dry. Any wetness can lead to rapid heat loss and unwanted emergencies. To avoid going to bed when cold, you can do some exercise routines such as jumping jacks, eat some food or drink hot water. Also, be keen on the size and shape of the accessories and gear you use.
